Crisp Cold Air, a Loaf of Bread, a Sixer…

…but by the time Zack & I left the shop, our favorite grocery purveyor was closed.   All we had was an empty parking lot, the monotone glow of the sodium lamps, and fresh snow on the ground.

Nothing to do but enjoy the last of this long winter:

The last of the meting piles of exhaust stained snow will be gone soon, to be replaced by semi-warm evenings, spring BBQs, and hopeful-if-still-unseasonable shorts-wearing.  See you all out riding!

Friday Round-up

I’m sitting in the sun.  Well, I’m sitting in the flat Boston late-winter light coming though the door as I peruse the interwebs, make calls, and generally act the part of an up-and-coming entrepreneur.  Here’s a little selection of cool stuff I came across- soon we’ll all be out in short sleeves instead of hiding indoors!

From the Lovely Ladies on Beautiful Bikes Calendar, via GIrls on Bikes: (Yes, I check this out often.)

A few from Velonista:  Crazy Italians…

One of many cool new Kashimax saddles from Bluelug:

Via Milano Fixed:  The truest sign ever, and a $3500 Rapha/Timothy Everest suit collab:

And finally, one of the many awesome photos from the Tour of California over at Velodramatic:

Spring is on the way- enjoy the weekend!

Riding in Sequence

NYC photographer Jose Martinez came up with a clever way of avoiding the inveitible 1000 photo shuffle – something that lurks in every photographers shadow.  Instead of sorting out photos and posting them in an Flickr set, he drops the sequence of photos into a video file with some music, making for a great stop-motion flick.  Only if Keena took this many photos!  (Via Prolly for the Bloglin)

Black & White

I was catching up with Zach’s Zlog Blog and came across photographer Brenton Salo.  He recently posted a small series of black & white track bike photos, which were quite impressive.  Check out Brenton’s blog here and peep the rest of his work.  Now for those black & whites:

Bicycles in Costa Rica : Part 1

”You should take photos of cyclists during your trip, write about them and email it to me.”
I asked a relatively new friend Marni to do this the day before she left town for a month in Costa Rica, almost certain it wouldn’t actually happen.  To my suprise, when I opened my email today, there were a series of messages filled with photographs, comments and a nice little recap of her trip!  It appears that Tico’s (the term Costa Rican’s use for themselves) rely heavily on bicycles for commuting, working and weekend fun!  I’ll be spreading out the other photos in a 4 part series over the next few days, they’re awesome, as is her commentary!   Enjoy & Thanks again Marni!

So, about bikes in Costa Rica..

At first I was a bit disappointed since I wasn’t seeing so many bike riders. There would be a pretty big batch of them in the mornings and evenings commuting to and from work, but other than that they were
pretty rare during the week. I quickly realized that all the cyclists come out on weekends. They love that stuff! There would be packs of like 10 of em all dressed up in their fancy cycling outfits biking
around the mountains. Oh yeah, the mountains! They are so beautiful.  I spent most of my time around San Jose in the middle of the country which is called the Central Valley, and basically no matter where you
turn your head you see these incredible mountains all around you. It’s breathtaking.

A fruit (I think?) delivery bike boy in the central street of San Jose.  Check out the crazy looking guy crossing the street in the background!

A picture I snagged from the back of a bus in the Orosi Valley. It’s a little hard to see, but he’s texting and riding!

Some guys riding on the main street of my neighborhood. And they even smiled! The traffic was very often insane, and costa rican drivers are animals. But the bike riders know how to handle it – they are
just as insane. Once I saw a guy riding a bike with his friend standing up on it behind him – i don’t know how they did it. Another time I saw a guy on a bike holding on to the back of a bus and being
pulled by it. That was the one day I didn’t have my camera!

I know this isn’t a bicycle, but I saw this super badass biker guy in downtown San Jose and I had to snag a picture. He was more than happy to pose for me!

Jayde Grenade

This video is the latest in a series of five from a group of young lads out of California that call themselves Jayde Grenade. You can’t wipe the smiles off their faces! Bombing hills, skitching around town, crashing into poles or taking hard spills – they’re all about having a great time. The video’s they are putting out is a good reminder that above all else, I simply love to ride my bike.

Aloha!

Now that I’m missing the sunshine and warm nights, I figured I could drop an update on the Aloha Fixed gang. They’ve had some amazing photographs up for a few weeks, its nice to see the personalities of these guys really come out of the photos and riding style:
