Roadies fighting cabin fever. Hardcore masochists who like seeing their own blood. Beer-inhaling bike nerds with tubular knobbies fetishes. Embrocation junkies with secret essential oil formulas. Belgians with extra cash to blow….
Any way you want to define cyclocross, one has to admit that it takes skills, balls, (or gender-neutral equivalent) and a Intuit-like indifference to skin-freezing weather conditions. Run-ups, off-camber sections, and bunny-hopping obstacles are all part of the fun.
Here in the Northeast, cyclocross is a natural extension of the racing season. This upcoming weekend marks the end of ‘cross season, but if you have a hankering for self-inflicted pain, snow-covered glory, and microbrew-fueled sprints, check out our pal Michael’s local blog, Euphoria Before Total Implosion. Mike is the MC behind BoldSprints, and his wonderful wife Natasha rocks it behind the Zeiss glass as Pedal Power Photography. When you are on the rollers at the next OPEN Bicycle event, and Mike is ringing the cowbells in your ears as you desperately sprint towards nausea, give him a smile, hold it in, and push a little harder!

Years back, we skateboarded. As we aged, many of us gave up skateboarding when the rewards started to be outweighed by the injuries. But we retained our love of adreneline and risk. We started riding fixed gears in traffic, became messengers, then discovered velodromes, onto road racing and ultimately cyclocross.
Personally, when I see the enthusiasm of the current crop of fixed gear riders, I see my future competitors evolving along the road that many of us traveled.
That said, get in touch this spring if anyone wants an introduction to track racing, which is the natural next step in the evolution toward race geek.
